In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Beirut Film Center (BFC) has teamed up with Swiss director and screenwriter Ayten Mutlu Saray for an ambitious feature film project titled “Iyaan.” This partnership represents a transformative approach to film education, offering aspiring filmmakers a unique opportunity to learn directly from industry experts and gain real-world experience.
“Iyaan” will be conducted as part of our masterclass hands-on series of workshops, where students will work alongside professionals, actively participating in every aspect of filmmaking. This collaboration not only bridges the gap between theory and practice but also provides students with invaluable networking opportunities.

Real Film Production Experience
What sets our master class series apart is its practical focus. You won’t just learn theory; you’ll apply your skills to an actual feature film project set to be produced in February or March 2024 by the renowned Swiss filmmaker Ayten Mutlu Saray. This hands-on experience is your chance to be part of a real film production team, putting your newfound knowledge into practice.
In this workshop, you’ll dive deep into the crucial aspects of pre-production, setting the stage for a successful film project. Led by Sarah Kaskas, an award-winning filmmaker with a track record of socially relevant content, you’ll learn the ropes of:
Scheduling: Gain insights into creating efficient shooting schedules that maximize your resources and time.
Budgeting: Understand the intricacies of film budgeting, from securing funding to cost management.
Location Hunting: Explore the art of finding the perfect locations that breathe life into your story.
Local Sourcing: Discover how to tap into local resources, talent, and expertise to enhance your film’s authenticity.

Sarah Kaskas is an award-winning Lebanese/American filmmaker, an Emmy nominated producer and a film educator. Focusing on the struggles and perseverance of marginalized communities, Sarah’s films have been touring world renowned festivals such as Tribeca, Aspen Shortsfest, Odense International and Hollyshorts. In 2016, Sarah co-founded Karaaj Films released “Bread and Tea” which premiered and won Best Short Documentary at Cinéma Vérité. Her feature documentary “Underdown” premiered at IDFA in 2018 and picked up 5 awards including the Grand Prix at Mediteran Film Festival and the Jury Prize at Malmö Arab Film Festival. Her short documentary “STRUCK” and short fiction “The Window” were both completed in 2021 and are currently on tour. “The Window” has won Best Cinematography at Imagine This Women’s Film Festival and Best Narrative Short at Arab Film Festival. In 2022, Sarah co-produced “Beirut Dreams in Color,” an Emmy nominated documentary commissioned by The Guardian. Sarah is currently based in Beirut and is freelancing as a director, film educator and festival manager.
Production Design Masterclass
in the second part of our series, you’ll work closely with Sabina Botros to master the art of production design. Collaborating with a cinematographer is an essential aspect of creating a compelling visual narrative. During this workshop, you’ll learn to:
Create the Look and Feel: Dive into the creative process of designing the visual elements of your film, from aesthetics to atmosphere.
Mise en Scène: Explore the world of mise en scène, where every detail, from lighting to set design, contributes to storytelling.
Collaborate Effectively: Understand the synergy between the production designer and cinematographer to ensure a seamless cinematic experience.
